La coltivazione del pistacchio e’ molto impegnativa e faticosa. In primo luogo, le piante fruttificano solo una volta ogni due anni e crescono in terreni accidentati dove non e’ possibile ricorrere all’uso delle macchine per le operazioni colturali; ne consegue un notevole aumento dei costi di produzione per gli operatori del settore.
I pistacchi vengono raccolti a mano, uno ad uno, tenendosi in equilibrio fra i massi di lava nera con sacchi di tela legati al collo. Gli interventi colturali non sono molto accurati e frequenti, ma spesso sono limitati alla potatura, che avviene tra dicembre e febbraio, per contenere lo sviluppo dei rami e talora alla concimazione, alla scerbatura e, ove possibile, a qualche lavorazione.
COLLECTION The cultivation of pistachio is very demanding and tiring. Firstly, the plants bear fruit only once every two years and grow in rough terrain where it is not possible to resort to the use of machinery for cultivation operations; this results in a significant increase in production costs for operators in the sector. The pistachios are harvested by hand, one by one, balancing between the black lava boulders with canvas sacks tied around the neck. The cultivation interventions are not very accurate and frequent, but are often limited to pruning, which takes place between December and February, to contain the development of the branches and sometimes to fertilization, weeding and, where possible, to some processing.
