Il Pistacchio (pistachia vera) e’ un arbusto, più raramente un albero di piccola taglia, di altezza non superiore ai 6 metri, dotato di radici profonde, dal tronco nodoso e contorto di colore grigio brumastro e dal fogliame caduco. La pianta si trova a suo agio su delle rocce laviche proibitive per qualsiasi altro tipo di vegetazione.
Se vogliamo coltivare il pistacchio bisogna sapere che su otto piante femmine bisogna piantare un maschio e sapere ancora che il maschio deve essere piantato in sopra vento e in sotto vento le femmine, in questo modo il vento può trasportare il polline dei fiori dai maschi fino al pistillo delle femmine.
Il terreno, caratterizzato in prevalenza da rocce che affiorano in superficie, crea degli ostacoli alla meccanizzazione di tutte le pratiche culturali indispensabili e determina elevati costi di produzione.
La difficile raccolta su questi terreni e’ il maggior motivo per il quale si impone ai pistacchieti etnei un ciclo di produzione biennale.
THE PISTACHIO PLANT Pistachio (true pistachia) is a shrub, more rarely a small tree, no more than 6 meters high, with deep roots, with a gnarled and twisted trunk of a brumish gray color and with deciduous foliage. The plant is at ease on lava rocks that are prohibitive for any other type of vegetation. If we want to grow pistachio we need to know that on eight female plants we must plant a male and also know that the male must be planted in the upper wind and the females in the lower wind, in this way the wind can carry the pollen of the flowers from the males up to the pistil of females. The terrain, mainly characterized by rocks that emerge on the surface, creates obstacles to the mechanization of all indispensable cultural practices and determines high production costs. The difficult harvesting on these lands is the main reason why a two-year production cycle is required on the Etna pistachio groves.
